he much-awaited TCS' passport project, which aims to issue passports in three days, is all set to be launched in a week or two, a media report said.
"The Passport Seva Project is finally expected to be launched in a week or two," a senior ministry of external (MEA) official was quoted by LiveMint as saying.
"The infrastructure is ready, software glitches have been fixed and security issues are in place for the project to roll," the official said.
The three-day passport project will enable people to submit their passport applications online and maintain a central database that can be accessed by both the police and passport officials.
The process in turn will speed up the police verification process, which is currently the major cause of delay in issuing of passports.
According to the report, the contract for implementing the project, worth Rs 1,000 crore was given to TCS in Oct 2008, with an implementation timeline beginning in Jun 2009.
Since Jun 2009, the project failed to take off as TCS has reportedly been unable to provide fool-proof software.
