Miss World 2010 Alexandria Mills: Alexandria Mills Won Miss World 2010

Sunday, October 31, 2010 0 comments

Blue-eyed blonde American teen Alexandria Mills has won the Miss World crest for 2010, beating more than 100 other hopefuls at a glittering observance in south China.Miss-World-2010-Alexandria-Mills-300x240

Mills, an 18-year-old from the south US state of Kentucky, wept as outgoing Miss World Kaiane Aldorino of Gibraltar put the tiara on her head and directed her to a diamond-shaped throne assessing the pageant’s 60th anniversary.

The 1.75-metre attractiveness in white – a expert form recorded with the Elite Models bureau – signalled to the barracking gathering at the 2000-capacity Beauty Crown Theatre in the holiday resort village of Sanya on Hainan island.000000233810-alexandria_mills-fullsize-225x300

During the two-hour affray, which every year sketches a international TV assembly of about one billion, Mills said her month expended exploring China with the other 114 Miss World hopefuls had made a “big impact” on her life.000000233797-alexandria_mills-fullsize-300x199

Botswana’s Emma Wareus was second, and Venezuela’s Adriana Vasini put third in the pageant, which was first held in 1951.

The pageant got off to a colourful start with a presentation by dancers and drummers from China’s Li ethnic few assembly, who mostly reside on Hainan isle, which was hosting the happening for the fifth time in eight years.

Before the contestants whirled in nationwide costume for the “Dances of the World” segment, viewers were treated to a video montage of the women’s whirlwind trip of China – from the Great Wall to the buying malls.

Early very well liked Mariann Birkedal of Norway, recorded by British bookmaker William Hill as the woman to trounce before Mills, completed in the peak seven.

A win for Norway could have initiated a mix in Beijing, where the government is angry that the Oslo-based Nobel managing assembly bestowed this year’s Nobel Peace Prize to imprisoned Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo.

Aldorino, 24, said she had relished her year as Miss World, saying that in all the nations she had travelled to, one thing had stayed the same: “The grin on a child’s face, and that’s what has apprehended the moment”.

The affray emphasises the significance of benevolent humanity work.

Miss “Beauty with a Purpose” – Kenya’s Natasha Metto, who has worked on combatting an outbreak of parasitic Jigger fleas in her homeland – acquired a “fast-track” location in the last assembly of 25, but was then eliminated.

Ireland’s violin-playing Emma Waldron, who won the gifts challenge and completed in the peak five, wowed the assembly by welcome them in Chinese, while Miss China, Xiao Tang, talked mostly in English.

The happening competitors the Miss Universe pageant belongs to by US tycoon Donald Trump, which was won by Mexico’s Jimena Navarrete in August.

In 1951, Sweden’s Kiki Hakansson became the first Miss World. Oscar-winning American player Halle Berry was a finalist in 1986.

Venezuela and India have made the most Miss Worlds, with five titleholders each. Bollywood celebrity Aishwarya Rai took the crest in 1994.

In 2002, the pageant was shifted from Nigeria to Britain after more than 200 persons past away in clashes sparked when a bulletin proposed the Muslim prophet Mohammed would have selected a wife from amidst the contestants had he been alive.

Google bans phone app used in spying

Saturday, October 30, 2010 0 comments

A controversial mobile phone application, which helps a cell phone user read the text messages of others secretly, has been removed from sale by internet search engine Google. Google said the application, called SMS Secret Replicator, violated its terms, The Independent reported on
Friday.
mzl.qiaefwaz.320x480-75Once installed on a mobile phone, the Android phone application automatically creates carbon copies of incoming text messages and forwards them to a selected number - prompting fears it could be used by jealous lovers and even work colleagues to snoop on private messages.

Jealous lovers are encouraged to secretly set up a password-protected application on their partners' phones and set it to forward text messages to their own, the paper said.

"The app is unique because there is no visible icon or shortcut to access it, so once it's installed, it will continue to monitor without revealing itself," the developer DLP Mobile was quoted as saying.

Its chief executive, Zak Tanjeloff, said the application was "certainly controversial but can be helpful to people in relationships where this type of monitoring can be useful".

The app's creators have given it the slogan "nothing is secret". Google confirmed it had suspended the application.

Mobile Number Portability from Nov 1

BSNL Logo

Image via Wikipedia

After missing several deadlines Mobile Number Portability (MNP), which allows subscribers to retain their numbers even after changing service operators, will be launched from November 1, Telecom Minister A Raja said today.
''The MNP will be partially operational from November 1.

We wanted to inaugurate it in Haryana,'' Mr Raja told reporters here.

Speaking to mediapersons on the sidelines of an event organised by the BSNL, Mr Raja said in the first phase, the MNP will be launched in 11 circles and the implementation will begin from the second or third week of November.

''An official announcement about this will be made on November 1,''he said.

The implementation of MNP has already been delayed four times due to several reasons including the absence of the necessary infrastructure.

Initially, MNP was to be implemented by December 31, 2009 in all the metros along with the states of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

The deadline was then changed to March 31, 2010 and then to June 30, 2010. The June 30 deadline was again deferred as operators were not ready with the infrastructure to provide the service.

The Department of Telecom (DoT) had given licences to Syniverse Technologies and MNP Interconnection Telecom Solutions, a 74:26 joint-venture between US-based Telcordia and Deepak Talwar Consultants Pvt Ltd to implement the Number Portability service.

Walkman finally buried by Sony

Tuesday, October 26, 2010 0 comments
After three decades and more than 220 million units, Sony has stopped selling its Walkman cassette player in Japan, the company said, admitting the gadget could not keep up in the digital age.

Cherished by a generation of joggers, school children and music fans since its launch in 1979, the Walkman revolutionised the way people listened to music but has since been overtaken by another icon of the modern era -- the iPod.

"The music-listening style of our customers has shifted so much to digital audio," Sony spokeswoman Hiroko Nakamura told AFP. "We have decided to end shipments because demand for the cassette-type Walkman has decreased."

Models on the company's Japanese website were marked "production completed".

The consumer electronics giant said that Chinese-made Walkman cassette players would still be exported to markets such as North America, Europe and Asia.

The July 1, 1979 rollout of the portable cassette player helped transform Sony into a global electronics powerhouse.

The Japanese giant sold 30,000 Walkmans in the first two months after its launch, and 50 million within a decade.

Three decades on, however, Sony has found itself struggling against rivals such as Apple, which has enjoyed immense success with its iPod music player.

Times have changed since Sony engineer Nobutoshi Kihara sketched out designs for the Walkman by hand.

Mukesh Ambani's home antila in the skies costliest

Sunday, October 17, 2010 0 comments

CaptureReliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambanis new 27-storey Mumbai skyscraper likely sets a record as the worlds most expensive residential home, according to Forbes magazine.
"Indias richest man, and the fourth-richest man in the world, has eschewed understatement," the magazine said reporting Ambanis plans to move into the 570-foot building, called Antila, this month.
Noting that the home is worth 630 million pounds, or $1 billion, as reported by the Telegraph, Forbes said in its last ranking of worlds most expensive homes in November 2009, The Manor, Candy Spellings Beverly Hills mansion, won out at a price tag of $150 million.
New mansions may have come on the market since, "but even given those facts, at $1 billion the Antila outprices any home on the market, anywhere in the world, by an order of magnitude," it said.
"Given the enormous gap between the Antilas sale price and the known closing cost of any home sold in recent years, theres an awfully good chance that this is the most paid for a home, ever," Forbes said noting the highest price paid for a home in 2010 was somewhere between $47 million and $72 million for Le Belvedere, in Bel Air.
According to reports, the "awfully strange-looking tower" has a health club, gym, dance studio, a ballroom, guestrooms, numerous lounges, a 50-seat screening room, an elevated garden, three helipads, and underground parking for 160 vehicles.
The Indian building is a skyscraper, which is bound to fetch more than a single-family home - even a stately 19,500-square-foot building across the street from the Metropolitan Museum of Art such as Helus, Forbes said. "But Ambani is moving in with his wife, three children and a modest 600-person staff. That makes it a residence, and by my count, the worlds most expensive," it said.

At first it sounds like a weepy heartbreaker with the opening lines: "I cried when I heard you were cheatin''/I cried when I said I was leavin''/I cried when my heart stopped believin''/But I''m all out of tears." But the chorus explains these are no tears of pain. Oh no. Just "happy tears".

Terry Kennedy

Wednesday, October 13, 2010 0 comments

as_skate_tkmaloof_576-300x168Terry Kennedy:Since that time, skateboarding was first adorned with the presence of Terry Kennedy, we fell in love with him. He was funny and charismatic. He was the breadwinner, I did it out of gang life ordained in Long Beach, not intact (the bullet scars decorate his body), but at least in one piece. I spent two weeks on the road with Terry a few years ago at Red Bull’s Seek & Destroy (which returns in May 2011), and I learned about the family, Terry and as skateboarding and that families are at the center of his world.

Recently, BET became fascinated with charm and Terry gave him his own television show, “Being Terry Kennedy,” which premieres tonight. Show follows Terry around, documenting his skate / rap / tycoon everyday life. TV shows slippery slope for the skaters, you can easily hit and hit it hard, but Terry has promised me that he would not fall prey to the traps, which are connected skating show yielded in the past.

You have television shows. What is the deal with that?
I clicked on the family, skateboarding career, music, and I, being young, up and coming mogul.

I’ve seen at the bottom of a press release that you are also looking for love. Are you going to be crying, looking at the cold girl?
No, not at all. Not at all. I was a little too tough for that person. I come from a background where, if I did that the next time I come home it would be a problem.
It must be tough for a guy like you who has a lot of money to find a girl that is not only your money.
It is. What’s so funny is my dad back in my life lately and all the conversations we have. He is so over me with such a situation. He wanted to, “Do not nobody pregnant. Make sure you find the right girl!” Between him and my grandmother is such a battle, when I bring her home. They’re like, ‘What do I do? As her background? “It’s like, damn, dude, relax!

There golddiggers, you should beware.
Yes, there are, and they are big, they’re doing. You should be careful out there.

How much of your immediate family played in the show?
80 percent of the show. When I go out of the League, I do not talk to them much about it, but I want to receive information and to know that I will not undermine our family or my career. I always come to them no matter what and talk to them about everything. They are my backbone.

Do you have a lot of weight on your shoulders, taking care of the family. How hard it is to know everything going for you?
It was like that since early on. I lost my mother when I was 15 years. I lost my father in my life when I was 5 years old, he had just come into my life three months ago. I’m 25 now. I still carry a lot because I’ve never had my parents there, and it is difficult for the child. This immediately helped me to grow up and fight for my brother and my grandmother to get them out of the situation. It was a lot of pressure on my shoulders, but he made me the person I am today. I am so strong-minded I can allow things to go back, and I can concentrate, because all the difficulties I was dealing with the early stages.

Do you have a guy Baker / Deathwish skateboards family member, Antwuan Dixon, that comes from similar backgrounds.
Same background. His brothers are living that lifestyle, but they gang fireworks, and also locked up now and do the time. But if you come from California, from all areas of Long Beach, Carson, Compton, family Theotis Beasley from Inglewood, and they all gang fireworks as well. If you come from any of those places, it’s kind of hard. There’s a band on every corner.
Do you get nervous for Antwuan? He has an amazing talent.
It hurts me. I take this to heart. We used to call him Candy. He came when he was 15-years-old just eat candy and best perfume ever and just wanted to skate. Now I’m talking to him like an older brother, straight from my heart. I know it’s bad with my brothers because I had my brothers that go through the same role, in and out of jail. But I’m telling him that he was able to change their lives. You’ve got to give and giving you to do it right. This is something that Andrew Reynolds has taught me, “the only way you can do for them to do it right.” So the best thing I can do for them is to stay on this forum. I tell him not to take yourself down, you have to be strong for his mother and brother.

Starting from the same background Trife Jereme Rogers.
No! Hell no! Jereme I love to death, but I have them to the same talks with him. Why would you give something that made you [skateboarding]? This is something that I do not understand. Why do not you stop skating? That’s who you are as a person. I never put skateboarding on the back burner. Skateboarding will always be first in this life of mine, because that is what I am and what brung me in these situations.

What is your opinion on rap Rogers?
It is different for me to rap, I’m through the material. I shot, I lost my mother, I happen to make it a skate … It’s not even about the rap for me, it is about therapy.

Rogers had a song about getting ticket. This is a rough business.
Ha! Stop it. Come on. We had such a positive conversation, and you should throw away the key in it.

Explain to me why you are doing television. You saw what happened with Ryan Sheckler: It was such a reaction. Editing has the potential to make you look wrong. What caused you to feel confident enough to think it was the right move for you?
I’m going to be honest, my story may not come through soft. Everything that I have experienced in my life … that’s what I want to teach everyone in my city and inner cities across the country and in my African American culture, do not be afraid of who you are. If I was afraid of who I am as a person, whom I’ll never be on the phone with you right now, I would never have friends like Andrew Reynolds, I would never skateboarder, nothing would ever be for me. That’s why I wanted to do a TV show to show, I come from the same situation or worse, as many African Americans, and I was able to prevail because I stayed true to what I believe in.

Google car Google to launch car that drives by itself

Sunday, October 10, 2010 0 comments

Internet giant Google will soon launch a car that can drive by itself.
Google engineers have tested a "self-driving" car on the streets of California and covered 140,000 miles on the road, BBC reported.

The cars use video cameras mounted on the roof, radar sensors and a laser range finder to look out for traffic, software engineer Sebastian Thrun said.

There is, however, a trained driver in stand-by mode, ready to take control.

Thrun, a professor of computer science and electrical engineering at Stanford University, said safety was the "first priority" in the project.

Routes are pre-planned, mapped first by real drivers, and local police are briefed in advance, he said.

He pointed to figures from the World Health Organisation that over 1.2 million people were killed each year on the roads, and said that number could be reduced.

"We believe our technology has the potential to cut that number, perhaps by as much as half."

"It (the project) provides a glimpse of what transportation might look like in the future thanks to advanced computer science. And that future is very exciting," he said.

Red onions can prevent heart disease: Scientists

Saturday, October 9, 2010 0 comments

red-onionsAccording to scientists the humble red onion could help prevent heart disease. They have discovered that the vegetable - commonly used in Mediterranean and Indian cuisine is instrumental in removing bad cholesterol, which can cause heart attacks and strokes, from the body.
But the vegetable’s health benefits do not stop at that, it also plays a vital role retaining good cholesterol, which help protect against heart disease, in the body.
Scientists in Hong Kong fed hamster who had been placed on a high-cholesterol diet with crushed onions.
They found that after eight weeks, bad cholesterol levels, or low density lipoprotein (LDL) levels in their, had fallen an average of 20 per cent.
However, the high density cholesterol levels of hamsters showed no change.
A Daily Mail report quoted Zhen Yu Chen, who headed the research as saying that the results support the claim that regular consumption of onion reduced risk of coronary heart disease. The research was carried out at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
According to Chen, despite extensive research on onions, little is known of how their consumption interacts with human genes and proteins involved in cholesterol metabolism within the body.
He said that they had undertaken the study to characterise the interaction of onions with enzymes in an attempt to explore the underlying cholesterol-lowering mechanism.
Although white onions are more widely used in Britain, red onions are more commonly used in India, the Mediterranean and the Middle East.
Red onions are much sweeter than the white variety and are often consumed raw in salads.

Logitech unveils first gadget for Google TV

Thursday, October 7, 2010 0 comments

(Reuters) - Logitech International SA showed off on Wednesday its $300 set-top box for the soon-to-be-launched Google TV, the first glimpse of what the Web search giant's holiday-season television-streaming product will look like.google-tv1

The $299.99 Revue is touted as a way for users to watch both television programs and Web content -- Google has already landed deals with the likes of Time Warner Inc's HBO and News Corp -- on a TV that Japan's Sony Corp will build and sell.

But Colin Gillis, an analyst with BGC Partners, said consumers might balk at the price tag.

"That's a piece of change," Gillis said. "The price point, as Apple has pointed out, for a device like this is about $99. So, it's expensive and yet another box you've got to plug in."

Apple Inc last month unveiled a Web-to-TV device for $99 called Apple TV, which is expected to battle Google TV as well as cable companies for control of the digital living room.

Gillis expects sales of the Logitech Revue to largely be confined to consumers of "cutting edge technology."

Logitech on Wednesday also unveiled other peripheral products for Google TV, including a keyboard controller and a video calling device.

Google Inc has signed content partnership deals with a range of media and Internet companies, including NBC/Universal for CNBC programming and Amazon.com Inc for video-on-demand movie and TV show titles.

Devices powered by Google TV will be launched this month.

Web search king Google is chasing the $70 billion TV advertising market, but the world's most creative and deep-pocketed technology companies such as Microsoft Corp and Apple have struggled to crack the market.

Google TV presents a new outlet for the company's trove of video at social networking website YouTube.com. But the company also faces resistance from media companies, who are concerned that Web-enabled TV could harm their traditional TV business with numerous cable carriers.

Google has now taken tourism to the next level by allowing people worldwide to watch from the comfort of their home monuments like Stonehenge, the streets of Italy's Pompeii, and the remote landscapes of Antarctica. Capture

But instead of the usual Google Streetview cars which have become a familiar site on British streets, new snaps were taken using a special Google tricycle. The Street View trike, as it is known, was sent around the world to photograph some of the hardest to reach places on the planet.

The trike carries a mounted Street View camera, and a specially decorated unit with imaging & GPS technology, the Daily Mail reported. Google's Brian McClendon, head of engineering, Google Earth and Maps, introduced the new feature by saying how thrilled he was that all seven continents could now be accessed using the technology. He took the pictures of the penguins in the Antarctic.

"We introduced Street View back in May 2007, enabling people to explore street-level imagery in five US cities. We were excited to share a virtual reflection of the real world to enable armchair exploration," he added.
