The National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters is looking for candidates for its pilot written National Certification Exam.
When good language interpreting can be a matter of life or death, it is crucial to have qualified medical interpreters available. That’s why the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters has worked to develop a single national certification process that will award individuals the credential of “Certified Medical Interpreter” in a specified language.
An oral exam pilot was completed at the end of August, with 300 participants applying to take it following an “open call” from across the United States. "’The test assesses the skills and vocabulary of medical interpreting and covers the different areas that an interpreter encounters on a daily basis,’” said Patricia Chávez-Dietz, a Spanish interpreter and member of the Medical Interpreter Network of Georgia, in a Board of Certification press release. “’As such, it is a good test that only an individual trained as an interpreter, not just someone who is bilingual, would perform well on.’"
The written pilot exam was launched in September, and applications are still open for candidates interested in trying it. The exams carry an administration cost of $75.00 payable to PSI, the testing administration company. However, the fee will be discounted from the full charge for final written exams.
