The Chimpanzee Travis was not an ordinary beast. It had appeared in several commercials including that of a leading multinational beverage company. It was also knew Nash who was a friend of its owners.
On February 16, 2009, Travis attacked Charla Nash inflicting grave injuries to her face and limbs. Travis had left the house with Harold's car keys, and Nash came to help get the animal back in the house; upon seeing Nash, Travis immediately attacked her.
Chimp owner Herold, then 70 years old, attempted to stop Travis by hitting him with a shovel and stabbing him with a butcher knife; however this did not stop the attack. She then called 9-1-1 and gave a desperate plea for help to stop Travis from killing Nash.
She was very badly injured by the attack and was barely alive when she could be saved by the police.
Nash underwent several surgeries before she could be saved. Paramedics noted she lost her hands, nose, eyes, lips, mid-face bone structure, and received significant brain tissue injuries.
