A team that leads the nation in fewest penalties per game committed four in the first half and all were silly. Two false starts basically killed one offensive possession while a ridiculously stupid block in the back foul on Mike Schupp wound up realling hurting.
Schupp’s penalty forced Navy to start a possession on its own 7-yard line. Quarterback Ricky Dobbs then fumbled on first down and cornerback Sterling Moore scooped up the ball at the 1-yard line and scored.
Navy narrowly averted the same fate on its next possession after starting at its own 20-yard line. On first down, Dobbs delivered a late pitch and slot back Bobby Doyle could not handle it. The ball bounced back to the 3-yard line for a 17-yard loss before slotback Marcus Curry recovered it.
Navy’s last four drives began at its own 11, 20, 13 and 4 yard line. Of course, the fumble on first down set the Mids back to the 3-yard line on that one possession they started at the 20.
Navy managed only five frst downs and 100 total yards in the first half. SMU, which has 193 total yards, could easily be leading 35-7 at intermission. The Mustangs started drives at the visitors’ 40-yard line and their own 42-yard line in the second quarter and did not score.
