10 die in train collision in India

A passenger train crashed into another train early Wednesday near the Taj Mahal in northern India, killing at least 10 people and trapping scores of people in a smashed coach, police said.Rescuers used gas cutters to open the rear coach following the collision near Agra, the site of the Taj Mahal about 130 miles (210 kilometers) southeast of New Delhi, said Rajesh Bajpai, a railway spokesman.One of the trains, Mewar Express, was stopped at a red signal when another train rammed into it from behind, Sharma told The Associated Press.Rescuers recovered 10 bodies so far but the death toll could rise, said Surendra Srivastava, the Uttar Pradesh state police spokesman.Twenty-five injured passengers were taken to nearby hospitals, Srivastava said.Villagers and army soldiers stationed nearby helped police and rail officials in rescuing injured people.Authorities are still trying to determine why the accident happened, rail official Sri Prakash said. - APEarlier reportNEW DELHI:At least 10 people were killed and over 50 others injured when two trains collided some 150km south of the Indian capital early Wednesday, China’s Xinhua news agency said, quoting reports by the local TV Times Now.The Goa express train crashed into the Mewar express train near Mathura city around 4am, damaging one bogey of the Mewar expresstrain, said the report.The rescue operation is still going on to find the people trapped in the wreckage of the train, said the report.
