AICTE or All India Council for Technical Education established in 1945 by Government of India. AICTE is main planning and coordinating the development of the technical education system in India. The main functions of the AICTE include the promotion of qualitative improvement in technical education.
Government of India – Ministry of Human Resource Development constituted a nationalized group to check into the responsibility of AICTE in the context of proliferation of technical institutions, maintenance of standards and other related matters.
The council has set up a National Board of Accreditation (NBA) under clause of the AICTE Act, of AICTE aims to maintain level of some of the program offered in technical Institutions on par with program offered in Institutions across USA and Europe. AICTE covers program of technical education include Management, Town Planning, Catering Technology, Pharmacy, Architecture, Applied Arts and Crafts, Hotel Management etc. At present, there are 1,346 engineering colleges in India approved by the AICTE. AICTE for granting permission to new engineering colleges have got delayed.
