Virgin Mobile is launching its GSM services in India, beginning with 5 telecom circles in southern India within a week.
To start with, Virgin Mobile will start GSM services in the Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Chennai, and Tamil Nadu telecom circles.
Virgin Mobile – which at present operates in the CDMA network in India – said it also plans to start GSM services in the telecom circles of Maharashtra, Orissa, and of North India by March 2010.
According to M A Madhusudan, CEO of Virgin Mobile India, the starting of the GSM services in India will help the company consolidate further its position as one of the “leading, youth mobile service brands.”
Virgin Mobile’s new services come with novel offerings such as ‘vMingle’ – an integrated social networking service that brings all social networking websites at one place. vMingle will let users stay in touch with friends across all social networking websites at one time through a single log-in, the CEO of Virgin Mobile India said in a statement.
Another service of Virgin Mobile – called ‘vGenie’ – offers prompts and alerts such as wake-up calls, birthday reminders, as well as social networking updates.
Yet another offering is the ‘vBelong’ by which users can create and design their own WAP sites for their group, college, and the like, according to M A Madhusudan.
For the time being, Virgin Mobile will charge consumers in the telecom circles in southern India 20 paise a minute for both local calls and STD calls to any Virgin mobile number without any special package. Those subscribers of Virgin Mobile calling any other network will be charged at 40 paise a minute for local calls, and at 50 paise a minute for STD calls.
Bollywood actors Genelia D’Souza and Ranbir Kapoor are Virgin Mobile’s brand ambassadors in India.
