U.S. national team striker Charlie Davies,23, one of the team’s most promising players in the past year, was severely injured ina fatal one-car accident early Tuesday morning at 3:15 a.m. crash on the George Washington Memorial Parkway near Washington.
He underwent surgery at Washington Hospital Center, is in stable condition after surgery onTuesday afternoon but the extent of his injuries is unkown,but it does notseems to be life-threatening.Another passenger, Ashley J. Roberta, 22, of Phoenix, Md., was killed in the crash.U.S. Coach Bob Bradley said in a statement released by the federation, as a team we are saddened to learn this news,further he said, Our thoughts and prayers are with Charlie and his family, as well as the people in the car and the families of the others involved.In June, Davies drew praise for his breakout performance at the Confederations Cup in South Africa, where he scored one goal andprovided an attacking spark to the United States lineup against world powers Spain and Brazil.
