Fish livers contain beneficial fatty acids

Monday, May 9, 2011 0 comments

lqNnQ5TAY032V52QThe fishing industry usually discards fish livers, but they are actually a good source of polyunsaturated fatty acids which are beneficial to health, according to a new study.

Fish livers have hardly been used to date, with exceptions such as cod livers, which are used to produce the well-known medicinal oil.

However, these organs contain compounds that are beneficial to health, according to researchers from the University of Almeria, Spain, reports the Journal of Food Composition and Analysis.

"The livers of edible fish are a good source of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFA), especially those in the omega 3 family, such as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)," said Jose Luis Guil-Guerrero, who led the study.

These fatty acids are used to prevent and treat some kinds of cancer, depression, Alzheimer's disease, schizophrenia, behavioural problems and cardiovascular diseases, according to an Almeria statement.

The study focused on 12 kinds of fish that are commonly eaten in south eastern Spain, such as hake, shortfin mako and European pilchard.

The livers of the great weever and the European anchovy were those that showed up the highest levels of LCPUFA.

Besides, all the species had a combination of omega-3/omega-6 acids that was "beneficial for human consumption", especially in the case of the liver of the blue whiting.

"Unfortunately, discarding these livers means that all their nutritional properties are missed," said Guil-Guerrero, "and if they were used this would also reduce the environmental pollution caused by throwing innards into the water".

Drinking a glass of wine daily helps ward off dementia

Sunday, February 20, 2011 0 comments

Drinking a glass of wine daily helps ward off dementiaScientists have found that a daily cocktail or glass of wine could help delay dementia.

Their research has shown that alcohol is an anti-inflammatory (inflammation promotes Alzheimer's) and raises good HDL cholesterol, which helps ward off dementia.

Researchers at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Centre in North Carolina found that older people who had eight to 14 alcoholic drinks a week had a 37% lower risk of dementia than non-drinkers.

However, adults who go on occasional binges face a higher risk, reports the Daily Mail.

According to a Finnish study, adults who binged in midlife at least once a month -- drinking, for example, more than five bottles of beer or a bottle of wine at one sitting -- were three times more likely to develop dementia, including Alzheimer's, 25 years later.

iPods filled with music could help patients recover from ops faster

Monday, February 14, 2011 0 comments

Apple iPods loaded with patients' favourite music could help them recover from operations faster.522300438

A trial will be conducted to test the theory that patients allowed to listen to music feel less pain, need less medication and leave hospital sooner after surgery, reports the Daily Express.

The trial would involve about 120 patients at Barts and The London NHS Trust, and be run by The Public Engagement Foundation charity.

If approved, the first to benefit will be new mothers, who will be exposed to music before and after they give birth, and those admitted for orthopaedic operations such as hip and knee replacements.

They will be monitored to see how music affects their anxiety levels, blood pressure and heart rate compared to those who don't listen to music.

Although it is thought that the best music to use depends on each patient's personal taste, the research will be used to create an original piece of music designed to have the most therapeutic effect. (ANI)

A good night’s sleep may be key to improved memory

Saturday, December 18, 2010 0 comments

A good night’s sleep could be the key to an improved memory and what’s more – it could help you imagine the future too.sleep

The REM (rapid eye movement) sleep stage — where people”s dreams are most vivid – is also important for people’s memory systems, said University of California researcher Sara C. Mednick and her colleagues.

Study participants were shown multiple groups of three words (e.g., cookie, heart, sixteen) and asked to find another word that can be associated with all three words.

In this case, the answer would have been “sweet.”

Participants were tested once in the morning and again in the afternoon, either after a nap with REM sleep, one without REM sleep or a quiet rest period.

Results showed that the REM sleep group improved by almost 40 percent over their morning performances.

“REM sleep is important for pulling together all the information we process on a daily basis and turning it into memories we can use later,” said Mednick.

“This helps us to understand more about the benefits of sleep and to help people maximize their sleep schedules for optimal productivity and memory retrieval,” she added.

Brain imaging research suggests that the ability to remember past events may be crucially involved in people”s ability to imagine events that have not happened yet and even simulate these “future” occurrences, according to researcher Daniel L. Schacter from Harvard.

Red onions can prevent heart disease: Scientists

Saturday, October 9, 2010 0 comments

red-onionsAccording to scientists the humble red onion could help prevent heart disease. They have discovered that the vegetable - commonly used in Mediterranean and Indian cuisine is instrumental in removing bad cholesterol, which can cause heart attacks and strokes, from the body.
But the vegetable’s health benefits do not stop at that, it also plays a vital role retaining good cholesterol, which help protect against heart disease, in the body.
Scientists in Hong Kong fed hamster who had been placed on a high-cholesterol diet with crushed onions.
They found that after eight weeks, bad cholesterol levels, or low density lipoprotein (LDL) levels in their, had fallen an average of 20 per cent.
However, the high density cholesterol levels of hamsters showed no change.
A Daily Mail report quoted Zhen Yu Chen, who headed the research as saying that the results support the claim that regular consumption of onion reduced risk of coronary heart disease. The research was carried out at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
According to Chen, despite extensive research on onions, little is known of how their consumption interacts with human genes and proteins involved in cholesterol metabolism within the body.
He said that they had undertaken the study to characterise the interaction of onions with enzymes in an attempt to explore the underlying cholesterol-lowering mechanism.
Although white onions are more widely used in Britain, red onions are more commonly used in India, the Mediterranean and the Middle East.
Red onions are much sweeter than the white variety and are often consumed raw in salads.

Red Wine Guards Brain From Stroke Harm

Thursday, April 22, 2010 1 comments
Some typical alcoholic beverages.

Researchers have discovered the way in which red wine consumption may protect the brain from damage following a stroke.

Two hours after feeding mice a single modest dose of resveratrol, a compound found in the skins and seeds of red grapes, Johns Hopkins researchers induced an ischemic stroke by essentially cutting off blood supply to the animals' brains.

They found that the animals that had preventively ingested the resveratrol suffered significantly less brain damage than the ones that had not been given the compound.

Ischemic stroke usually results when an artery to the brain is blocked, often by a blood clot or a fatty deposit.

Sylvain Doré, associate professor of anesthesiology and critical care medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, says his study suggests that resveratrol increases levels of an enzyme (heme oxygenase) already known to shield nerve cells in the brain from damage.

When the stroke hits, the brain is ready to protect itself because of elevated enzyme levels. In mice that lacked the enzyme, the study found, resveratrol had no significant protective effect and their brain cells died after a stroke.

"Our study adds to evidence that resveratrol can potentially build brain resistance to ischemic stroke," says Doré.

Red wine has gotten a lot of attention lately for its purported health benefits. Along with reducing stroke, moderate wine consumption has been linked to a lowered incidence of cardiovascular disease - the so-called French paradox.

Despite diets high in butter, cheese and other saturated fats, the paradox goes, the French have a relatively low incidence of cardiovascular events, which some have attributed to the regular drinking of red wine.

Doré cautions against taking resveratrol supplements, available alongside vitamins and minerals and on websites touting its benefits, because it is unclear whether such supplements could do harm or good.

He has not tested resveratrol in clinical trials. And while resveratrol is found in red grapes, it's the alcohol in the wine that may be needed to concentrate the amounts of the beneficial compound. Doré also cautions that drinking alcohol carries risks along with potential benefits.

He also notes that even if further research affirms the benefits of red wine, no one yet knows how much would be optimal to protect the brain or even what kind of red wine might be best, because not all types contain the same amount of resveratrol. More research is needed, he says.

Doré says his research suggests that the amount needed could end up being quite small because the suspected beneficial mechanism is indirect, says a Johns Hopkins release.

"Resveratrol itself may not be shielding brain cells from free radical damage directly, but instead, resveratrol, and its metabolites, may be prompting the cells to defend themselves," he suggests.

Scientists have come up with yet more evidence of why tea is good for health - the drink can significantly reduce a woman's risk of developing ovarian cancer.

Previous research showed the tea also helps the heart, boosts the brain and lowers levels of"bad" cholesterol. Now, two studies have found that women women who drink two cups of black tea or one cup of green tea everyday could slash their risk of developing ovarian cancer by nearly half, the'Daily Express' reported.

The scientists have hailed the cancer-protecting properties of both teas which are packed with health-boosting antioxidants. One study at the University of Washington among 2,000 women, found those who drank one or more cups of green tea a day had a 54 per cent reduction in their chance of getting the cancer, which kills a number of women worldwide.

A second study by the National Institute of Environmental Medicine in Stockholm, also found that drinking at least two cups of black tea daily cut the risk of ovarian cancer by nearly 50 per cent.

Alcoholic hepatitis

Alcohol has long been associated with serious liver diseases such as hepatitis — an inflammation of the liver. But the relationship between drinking and alcoholic hepatitis is complex. Not all heavy drinkers develop alcoholic hepatitis, and the disease can occur in people who drink only moderately or binge just once.

Though damage from alcoholic hepatitis often can be reversed if you stop drinking, the disease is likely to progress to cirrhosis and liver failure if you don't.

The exact reason alcoholic hepatitis develops isn't known. What's clear is that if you have alcoholic hepatitis you'll need to avoid alcohol and other substances that harm your liver. For some people with severe liver damage, a liver transplant may be an option.

Mild forms of alcoholic hepatitis may not cause noticeable problems, but as the disease becomes more advanced and the liver more damaged, signs and symptoms are likely to develop. These may include:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea and vomiting, sometimes with blood
  • Abdominal pain and tenderness
  • Yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes (jaundice)
  • Fever
  • Abdominal swelling due to fluid accumulation (ascites)
  • Mental confusion
  • Fatigue
  • Dry mouth
  • Unusual thirst
  • Paleness
  • Lightheadedness
  • Unexpected, rapid weight gain

These symptoms may vary, depending on the severity of the disease, and are likely to become worse after a bout of binge drinking.

A good breakfast

A healthy breakfast can uplift your mood and keep you fit. "People who eat breakfast are known to put on less weight than people who skip it," says Desai. You can choose from a lot of breakfast foods like cereals, eggs, fruits, milk and more.

Use the stairs

Give the lift a skip. Climbing 10 floors can burn up to 100 calories in addition to working out your thighs, butt and hips. Climb the stairs to office and the adrenaline will boost your mood.

Have a salad for lunch

For lunch, put together a salad with vegetables such as lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers, onions, carrots and an olive oil dressing. This salad in rich in vitamins and minerals and is light on the stomach. It will keep you fuller longer and the antioxidants in the veggies will detoxify your body, leaving you refreshed.

Drink up on water

"Water adds natural moisture to your skin, giving you a fresh glow," says Desai. Believe it or not, a hydrated body retains less water. So, you can get rid of the retention and end up looking great at the same time.

Walk it

If you are too tired for a brisk walk, take it slow. Walking relieves stress and tension in your body. You can listen to music while you walk home, thereby relaxing your mind as well.

Everyone who has ever lost weight is more than happy to you how they lost their fat and to give you tips and advice on what you should do. People are willing to share their stories of how they lost weight by eliminating carbohydrates and eating nothing but protein, or by just eating rice and fruit all day or by eating vegetables and fruit all day. Other people proclaim the benefits of the all cereal diet. It seems that everyone is contributing and giving advice on how to lose weight but for some reason people are still getting fatter with each passing day.

The problem is that people follow these weight loss programs for several weeks. They lose a ton of weight and then they gain it all back once they starting eating like they use to.

So the million dollar question is.

How can I lose weight?

The trick to weight loss is to replace all of your empty foods with healthy nutritious natural foods.

Make sure each meal contains a bit of lean protein as well as plenty of vegetables and fruit. If you do this you should automatically decrease the amount of unhealthy carbohydrates that you eat on a daily basis. This includes foods like pretzels, bread and pasta.

If you increase the amount of vegetables you eat you will naturally increase the amount of fiber in your body. You will also be giving your body the nutrients it needs to function at peak capacity.

Eating more fruit will provide your body with the fructose that is needed to keep your mind awake and alert. You will be amazed at how your brain fog goes away when you eat 4 to 5 pieces of fruit a day. It will also control your cravings for sweets because there is nothing sweeter than or as good for you as fresh fruit.

Of course exercise is a great way to burn those excess calories and get rid of fat.

If you are having trouble losing weight than you should consider working with a weight loss specialist.

If you are having difficulties controlling your appetite then consider working with a medical specialist who specializes in weight loss. They can advise you in appetite suppressant medications, supplements and vitamins and even meal replacement programs.

Tips For Treadmill Buying Trips

Friday, January 8, 2010 0 comments
CAPE CANAVERAL, FL - AUGUST 19: (R-L) Space S...

Image by Getty Images via Daylife

Treadmills are simple to use, but can be dangerous in the wrong hands or around children. Today, fitness equipment manufacturers are trying to meet the high demand for home exercise treadmills. Today's best rated treadmills can do anything your training demands, such as hills, intervals, tempo, long distance, and anything else you can do on a treadmill.

Choose a longer treadmill belt of 54" or more if you or a family member has long legs. There are two types of frames - aluminum and steel; steel is heavier than the more expensive aluminum, which potentially increases stability but steel (not aluminum) may also rust or corrode from sweat. With treadmills you need to watch out for the impact involved when your feet hit the belt; your body absorbs up to two and a half times your body weight.

Adjustable inclines let you vary the steepness of a hill. A heart rate monitor enables a treadmill to automatically adjust the speed and/or the incline to keep your heart rate within the most optimum zone. Features such as extra cup holders, built-in fans, CD players and other electronic gizmos may be handy but not essential for you to get an ideal workout.

The newest models of treadmills come with many extra features that you may not need. Some excellent features, like heart monitors and safety keys that automatically stop the treadmill if you slip, will contribute to the enjoyment and safety of your treadmill workout or help add motivation. People, who don't have enough room for a bulky exercise machine, may want to consider a folding treadmill; they collapse to allow for easy storage.

Notice that some treadmill heart rate monitors clip onto an ear or, for more accurate readings, strap onto the chest. Some treadmills monitor your heart by way of sensors built into the frame, which are gripped by your hands, but can only be done if you're walking not running.

Treadmill manufacturers are competing for your business and price wars are creating big savings for buyers. Less expensive treadmill models may be fine for walkers but may not hold up as well for regular or seasoned runners. Any treadmill with a belt that causes jerky movements while you walk or run should be avoided.

It's best to buy a treadmill that has at least a one-year warranty. The more incline variation offered in a treadmill unit, the more expensive the model will be. The taller a person is the longer their stride so you'll need to choose a treadmill with a longer and wider belt.

When you're reading treadmill ratings or treadmill reviews, they'll usually cover safety statistics, the heart rate monitor, the various merits of the interactive model and computer fitness programs and levels. Make sure to add the cost of shipping when buying a treadmill online; quality models can be heavy and shipping will cost more, but some manufacturers do offer free shipping.

Do your research; treadmills are an important investment, regardless of the price, and if it's not right for you, you don't want to find out after you've set the treadmill up at home.

Did I mention to make sure to check out the warranty fine print; this is important. If you're looking for a heavy-duty treadmill that can withstand running as well as walking, be prepared to spend more money.

Your club commercial machine may be may be a good choice in a home version; you're already familiar with its features and probably are comfortable using it. Be aware the better quality treadmills can cost as much as $5000 and have a lot of bells and whistles you don't need.

The more programs the treadmill has to offer the more you can vary your workout and you'll be likely to continue exercising on a regular basis. The lack of wind resistance makes running on a treadmill slightly easier than it would otherwise be on an equal elevation grade outdoors.

Be careful, because any type of jogging or running, whether on a treadmill or not, puts strain on leg and hip joints. Whether you use a treadmill to walk, jog or run, the units are very effective at burning calories, raising heart rate and developing aerobic capacity.

Spend some time shopping around; work out exactly what you need, and then shop online and offline for the best price. By following the above tips you're sure to find the best treadmill for you. A treadmill is a good investment for anyone who has decided to make a conscious effort to become healthy and fit.

Most home-based child-care providers meet nutrition standards but don't give children enough physical activity, allowing them to spend too much time in front of the TV, a new study contends.

Oregon State University researcher Stewart Trost surveyed about 300 home-based child-care providers who looked after children ages 2 to 5. Though 78 percent offered more than an hour a day of active play, 41 percent said children sat for extended periods during the day, and two-thirds said the TV was on most of the day, the study found.

Children aged 2 to 5 shouldn't watch more than two hours of TV a day, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Trost, an expert on obesity issues, said that another finding -- that 63 percent of child-care providers restricted active play or exercise as a form of punishment -- was alarming.

"Would you withhold fruits and vegetables for kids who misbehave and negatively affect their health?" he asked in a university news release. "All the research shows that restricting physical activity makes children more, not less, likely to misbehave. So, it's not even an effective means of punishment."

Another startling finding, he said, was that less than half of the child-care providers had received any training in physical activity.

But the providers did "pretty well" in promoting healthy eating habits, the study found. Very few said they served fried foods or high-fat foods at meals or sweets or chips as snacks.

The study was published in the December issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.

ehlers danlos syndrome

Tuesday, December 1, 2009 0 comments
Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome is a disease related to joints, skins and blood vessels. The disorder relates to loosing of “binding tissues” which hold the bones and skin. The patients with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome have abnormality related to skin, joints and blood vessels and the person may have the disease transferred from their parents.
The signs of the Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome include the loose bone joints, weak blood vessels and scars on the skin. The person who has the disease has delayed healing of scars as compared with other normal skin patients. But the symptoms are not hard and fast and may vary from individual to individual. Some patients experience severe degree of disorder and some may have minor effects. The most important factor of the disease is heredity. EDS is the consequence of genetic disorder which is transferred from the parents to the patient. It is necessary for the patient of EDS that both of his parents had the disorder in their genes. So the diagnosis of the disorder requires taking detailed history not only of the patients but also of his/her parents.

The both type of history includes the study of firmness of joints and the texture and flexibility of skin. Other tests like Biopsy and urine analysis are also used for the diagnosis. The disease is complex and involves many specialists e.g. dermatologist, rheumatologist, orthopedist and geneticist.
The effects of the Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome can be handled by doing exercise, avoiding stress to joints and being careful when one is doing an activity which may make him fall. The corrective measures involve surgery of the joints. To avoid scars on the skin, protection against sunlight is necessary. The patients should use vitamin C. One in 10,000 people have the Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.

How To Reduce Weight By Increasing Your Metabolism

Structure of the coenzyme adenosine triphospha...

Image via Wikipedia

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of people who learn how to reduce weight by increasing their metabolism everyday. For many of those people the chief cause of their weight problem is overeating, irregular meal habits, and just plain not eating healthy foods. If you are one of them then it is important to understand that the best way to lose weight and get the body you always wanted is by increasing your metabolism.
The first place everyone looks to when it comes to weight reduction is their diet. They think, "I'll just eat less and lose weight", and while this can work it is only effective for a short period of time and for minimal losses. If your caloric intake goes to low the body responds by actually slowing down its metabolism because it goes into starvation mode. This happens because the calories needed for the body to function on a normal level are no longer available.
This is true whether you cut back on the amount of food you eat or start skipping meals everyday. Here is the theory behind going into a caloric deficit to lose weight: As you take in food from your daily diet, you gain nutrients and energy. If you use up more energy in a day than your diet provides, your body will tap into its supply of fat to give you the extra energy needed to function properly. Meals that are skipped, or which do not contain the right nutrition will eventually cause a low metabolic rate which in turn will cause the fat to return even faster when your diet finishes. You will know if your metabolic rate is low and your diet isn't healthy enough because you feel tired all the time. When you are on a diet, you go hungry and your body will signal to your brain to conserve fat for energy because your body is built with a mechanism to conserve fat during famine and it does not know the difference between starvation and a diet.
The second part of any weight reduction program is exercise because getting your body into motion is a good way to start increasing your metabolism. The simple fact is exercise burns calories, both during and after the exercise routine. Your resting metabolic rate will increase there by burning extra calories even while your body is at rest.
The hardest part about exercise is actually starting to do it. Once you have made the effort to fit more exercise into your daily routine, and stick to it, you will find it becomes easier and almost automatic. This is good because exercise is an important part of any weight reduction plan. Try getting at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise like walking briskly, jogging, biking, or swimming at least 3 days a week (build up to 5 or 6 days if you can). Exercise can come in many forms and can focus on toning different parts of the body as well as helping us to lose weight caused by excess body fat.
So there it is, if you want to know how to reduce weight then you need to increase your metabolism. The easiest way to do this is with a combination of diet and exercise. It will take a little will power and dedication at first, but once you get into the weight loss groove your new healthy lifestyle will become second nature.

How Long Does It Take To Digest Gum

Diagram of the Human Intestine.

The myth is that if gum is swallowed it can take seven years to be voided from your body, but not true. Every person’s digestion time is different, but it generally takes 24 hours to 72 hours to digest any food. Some foods will not break down in the stomach and will remain whole in the feces such as corn, (in some individuals) peas, gum, etc. Food passes through the stomach to the small intestine and then into the large intestine for further digestion and absorbed by water. Any undigested food such as some of the above mentioned will be passed in feces in a 24 hour period and other foods can take several days to pass completely. Constantly chewing gum is not good for people as it triggers the brain to the stomach to make the stomach feel like it needs food and it can also cause gastric problems. Warning: In some rare cases children that constantly swallow their gum can sometimes have a blockage in the intestines, but this is rare.
