Google announced that it is pulling the plugs on free Health and PowerMeter services that haven't won legions of users.

"We're going to retire two products that didn't catch on the way we would have hoped, but did serve as influential models," Google Health senior product manager Aaron Brown and Green Energy Czar Bill Weihl said in a blog post.

"While they didn't scale as we had hoped, we believe they did highlight the importance of access to information in areas where it?s traditionally been difficult," they said.

A PowerMeter service for tracking home electricity use will shut down on September 16.

Google Health service for storing and selectively sharing personal medical records online will "retire" on January 1 but users will be able to download their information through the following year.

"Both were based on the idea that with more and better information, people can make smarter choices, whether in regard to managing personal health and wellness, or saving money and conserving energy at home," Brown and Weihl said.

Google Health launched in early 2008 and PowerMeter software made its debut in late 2009.

Google Inc unveiled new features and technology to speed up Web searches and to make it easier for people to use its flagship search engine as they increasingly access the Internet from handheld mobile devices.

At a briefing in San Francisco, Google demonstrated a new feature called Instant Pages which allows certain Web pages to pop-up in a user's Web browser nearly instantaneously, as well as a revamped version of its website for mobile devices.

Google, the world's No.1 Internet search engine, said that traffic coming from mobile devices such as smartphones has increased by a factor of five during the past two years.

"We see all this mobile traffic growing on top of our desktop (PC) traffic," Google Fellow Amit Singhal said.

Singhal said that consumers' increased use of mobile devices benefits Google by allowing people to continue searching the Internet during times when searches on desktop PCs typically wane, such as after 9 p.m., during the weekends and during the summer months.

"There is no summer slump" with Internet searches on mobile devices, he said.

rim-readying-blackberry-tablet-wsj-0The BlackBerry tablet PlayBook will hit markets in India and 15 other countries within the next month, Research In Motion (RIM) said Friday.

The Waterloo-based Canadian company announced it plans to roll out the Playbook “in an additional 16 markets around the world over the next 30 days.”

Launched in the US and Canada last April, the tablet will reach India, Britain, France, Australia, the UAE and 10 other countries in the next 30 days, RIM said.

Hong Kong, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Italy, Spain, Germany, Holland, Mexico, Indonesia, Venezuela and Columbia will be the other countries to get the RIM tablet.

The RIM announcement said, “The BlackBerry PlayBook is the world’s first professional-grade tablet, delivering industry leading performance, uncompromised web browsing, true multitasking, HD multimedia, advanced security features, out-of-
the-box enterprise support and a robust development environment.”

According to analysts, RIM is expected to sell half a million tablets by the end of its current quarter.

India has over a million BlackBerry users and RIM will target them as the Wi-Fi tablet can link with the BlackBerry smart phone through BlackBerry Bridge without the need to subscribe to a wireless carrier.

Though Indian prices are not known at this stage, the seven-inch, Wi-Fi-only PlayBook comes in three models in the range of $499 to $699, featuring 16, 32 and 64 gigabytes of storage capacity.

RIM has said that it will launch 3G and 4G versions that run on wireless networks later this year. The new versions will also offer Android as well as native email.

Google to ditch support for older Internet browsers

Image via CrunchBase

Google is phasing out support for some Internet browsers from later this year.
Users of Internet Explorer 7, Safari 3 and Firefox 3.5 and all previous versions will lose some functions from Aug 1.

The features that will gradually stop working include access to Gmail, Google Calender, Google Talk and Google Docs.

The company warned that if users fail to upgrade, then these services will eventually stop working altogether, the Daily Mail reports.

They added that they are urging users to upgrade because of insecurities in the old browsers which could leave them prone to attack.

The announcement was made in a blog by Google's vice president (engineering) Venkat Panchapakesan, who said the move was also influenced by engineers who want to make use of the latest browser technology

Panchapakesan said on the blog: "These new browsers are more than just a modern convenience, they are a necessity for what the future holds."

"Older browsers just don't have the chops to provide you with the same high-quality experience."

Google Chrome users may also be affected by the move - but only if they have chosen to turn off the automatic update feature

Microsoft has also used several methods to attempt to get its users to upgrade. These include placing the software inside their monthly automatic updates.

Microsoft releases IE 9 in 11 Indian languages

Wednesday, June 8, 2011 0 comments

Microsoft released the latest version of Internet Explorer 9 in 11 Indian languages including Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Konkani, Malayalam, Marathi, Oriya, Punjabi, Tamil and Telugu.01-Internet-Explorer-9-Wallpaper

Microsoft may well be a late entrant in this space behind Google Chrome and homegrown browser Epic that is built specially for the Indian market.

This is not the first time Microsoft is engaging with the Indian market. The company has a few India-specific tools like Indic language input tool, phonetic keyboard that has language support, and features such as email, instant messenger are also available in local languages.

Experts feel that this could increase Microsoft's prominence in the browser market but will do only that.

"If Microsoft is looking at reaching the rural market and drive technology adoption, it is a good strategy but it will not lead to PC adoption. People are not going to buy a computer only based on local language offering. That won't happen," said Vishal Tripathi, principal research analyst, Gartner.

Google India Wednesday launched Google Global Market Finder -- a free online tool designed to help Indian companies expand their business and reach out to potential customers in the international market.
The tool will be available as part of Google Ads for Global Advertisers.

The tool was launched at a special event held by Google which was attended by representatives of numerous small and medium business (SMBs) enterprises.

Sridhar Seshadri, Head Online Sales, Google India, said they have seen tremendous success with the adoption of the AdWords platform by Indian SMBs in the last two years in the domestic market.

"With this launch, we want to reach out and help all advertisers, especially SMBs, by giving them access to information about markets that have shown demand for their products. Since the tool determines demand based on how often the product is searched online in a particular geography, it is quite accurate in its assessment of demand," said Seshadri.

Google launches +1 button for the third party sites

Friday, June 3, 2011 0 comments

google_1_buttonGoogle is now rolling out the +1 recommended button all across third party sites and the Google properties, just a day after social networking site Twitter launched its Follow button for the third party websites. This +1 recommended button was actually introduced in the month of March for Google advertisements and search results.

Google reported on its blog that they are releasing the +1 buttons to entire WWW. The search engine even added that it had already partnered with some sites in which +1 buttons will appear in near future. Google is further introducing buttons on its sites like Blogger, Product Search, YouTube and Android Market.

Google +1 Button
Google said that with just one click, the users will be able to recommend that news article, raincoat or sci fi movie to their contacts, friends and others. But how is this button useful? The users searching for some particular article on the search engine can now be able to see what their contacts or friends have liked thereby making it simple for them to choose the best from the lot.

Google has in fact launched this facility for some sites. The service is basically supposed to alter the way in which one searches the articles and other things on Google like a cooking recipe. While some may believe that this is a great service offered, there are others who do not find anything good in it. Either way, it is the welcome addition that will save huge time and efforts of users who will get more relevant search results than ever before.
