Google brings +1 button to search

Thursday, March 31, 2011 0 comments

CaptureGoogle Inc will begin allowing users to personally endorse search results and Web pages, its latest attempt to stave off rival Facebook Inc while trying to jump onboard a social networking boom.

The so-called "+1" button will start to appear alongside Google search results for select users from Wednesday, letting people recommend specific search results to friends and contacts by clicking on that button.

Eventually, the feature may begin to influence the ranking of search results, though that is only under consideration. Results are now ranked via a closely guarded algorithm.

The world's leader in Internet search is battling to maintain its share of Web surfers' time and attention, which is increasingly getting taken up by Facebook, Twitter and other social networks. But it has struggled to find its footing in the nascent market.

Mozilla rolls out Firefox 4

Wednesday, March 23, 2011 0 comments

Mozilla-Intends-to-Make-Firefox-4.0-SpeedierFirefox was released on Wednesday to vie Microsoft's Internet Explorer 9 (IE9) and Google Chrome in the fiercely competitive market for Web browsing software.

Nonprofit group Mozilla made Firefox 4 available as a free download to computers powered by Windows, Mac OS X or Linux operating systems in more than 80 languages.

Firefox 4 was billed as six times faster than its predecessor and boasted features including a "Do Not Track" signal to opt-out of having online activities recorded by websites for targeted online ads or services.

The opensource Web browsing software was also designed as a stage for rich video or game graphics based on the HTML5 standard being touted as a boon for online visual experiences.

"Firefox puts users in control of their Web experience, providing a streamlined user interface, fun new features, a boost in speed and support for modern Web technologies," Mozilla said in an online message.

Powerful new versions of Chrome and IE9 Web browsers were released earlier this month by Google and Microsoft, respectively, putting pressure on California-based Mozilla to release a finished version of Firefox 4.

Worst song ever' tops 30 million YouTube views

Tuesday, March 22, 2011 0 comments

Rebecca_Black_300Friday," sung by 13-year-old Rebecca Black, was uploaded to YouTube last month by Ark Music Factory, a Los Angeles-based company that was hired by the girl's parents to produce the song for their daughter.

"It's Friday, Friday, gotta get down on Friday, everybody's looking forward to the weekend," the chorus goes. "Partying, partying, partying. Fun, fun, fun, fun. Looking forward to the weekend."

The video attracted scant attention until a popular comedian linked to it on his blog 10 days ago saying "Songwriting Isn't for Everyone."

As the tune began to attract attention on YouTube, a Yahoo! music blog called it a "mind-meltingly horrific song" and asked readers "Is YouTube Sensation Rebecca Black's 'Friday' The Worst Song Ever?"

Time magazine described "Friday" as a "train wreck" and the video as "hilariously dreadful."

The poor reviews only fueled more interest in the video and it has become a viral hit, racking up millions of YouTube views, spawning a slew of parodies on the video-sharing site and making Black an Internet sensation.

A total of around 17,000 YouTube viewers have hit the "like" button on YouTube for the song while the vast majority -- 133,100 -- have gone for "dislike."

"Friday" was nonetheless number 45 on the iTunes list of best-selling 99-cent singles on Monday.

Amid the deluge of venom, Black has shown considerable poise and dignity in interviews and appearances in which she has addressed her numerous detractors.

The aspiring singer told ABC's Good Morning America that some of the comments had made her cry.

"When I first saw all these nasty comments I did cry," Black said. "I felt like this was my fault and I shouldn't have done this and this is all because of me.

"Now I don't feel that way," she said.

"I think I have talent on some level," Black told Good Morning America. "I don't think I'm the worst singer but I don't think I'm the best singer."

Asked who she would most like to sing a duet with, the YouTube star said Justin Bieber, the Canadian teen idol who was also discovered on YouTube.

Google releases WebM video plug-in for IE9

Wednesday, March 16, 2011 0 comments

google-webMGoogle has developed a WebM plug-in for Microsoft's Internet Explorer 9. The preview plug-in is now available to download for IE9 on Windows 7 and Windows Vista, though the release seems rushed to happen on the day of the IE9 launch. For example, the "known issues" page is, at time of writing, "not yet available". The developers did, however, comment on the download page; "They said elephants couldn't ride flying dolphins. They said that one of the world's most popular browsers couldn't play WebM video in HTML5. They were wrong."
The release of the plug-in comes after Microsoft released HTML5 H.264 plug-ins for Google's Chrome in February and Mozilla's Firefox back in December of last year. The aim of the plug-ins is to enable the HTML5 <video> tag to play more formats that the browser's authors intended; Mozilla and Google browsers only play only WebM based video, while Microsoft supports any installed codec but does not come with a WebM/VP8 codec, preferring H.264 by default.

Microsoft launches Internet Explorer 9

Tuesday, March 15, 2011 0 comments

Internet-Explorer-9Software giant Microsoft has officially released Internet Explorer 9 to the public. Internet Explorer 9 (IE9) will be available for download in 30 languages at beautyoftheweb.com. "It's a really good day for the Web," Microsoft corporate vice president Dean Hachamovitch said.

IE9 is built to make the most of Microsoft's latest operating system, Windows 7, as well as graphics processing chips that can power videos, games, graphics and other stunning visuals.

The long list of partners that have adapted websites to IE9 includes Facebook, Twitter, Pandora, Hulu, and Yahoo!, according to Microsoft.

"We have worked with partners reaching a billion active Internet users," Hachamovitch said. "All of these partners are using IE9 to make a more beautiful Web, starting today."
More than 40 million copies of IE9 have already been downloaded as part of the process leading up to its official release, according to Microsoft.

Microsoft showed off a lean, muscular new Internet Explorer crafted to spotlight slick websites and beat back competition from Firefox and Google in the Web browser arena.
Microsoft director of web services strategy Ari Bixhorn booted up an Apple MacBook Pro laptop running the latest version of Firefox for a side-by-side comparison at a radio station website with rich interactive graphics.

"The new 3G service will be a secure communication network enabling voice, data, video streaming and file sharing, enhancing real-time operational efficiency," the release said.

Google to let users block websites

Sunday, March 13, 2011 0 comments

Google Inc, owner of the most popular Internet search engine, unveiled a tool that will let users block unwanted websites as the company aims to improve the quality of its search results. googl

Users can click on a link in query results that gives them the option to hide all listings from sites that they dislike or find offensive or of low quality, Google said in a blog post. Once an Internet domain is blocked, the user will no longer see those results in future searches, the company said.

Google, which gets most of its sales from search-engine advertising, is trying to refine the relevance of its results after receiving complaints that spammers and some websites game its system to get more prominent placement. Google last month said it changed the way it carries out Web searches to feature more "high-quality" sites, affecting 12 per cent of queries.

xbox-360-4gb-kinect-bundleMicrosoft's Kinect has been named the fastest-selling tech gadget of all time after racking up sales of 10 million units since its launch in November.
The unit is the first mass-produced device that allows for motion and voice control of a video game console without the need to hold any controller. Microsoft said the device's success staked it a spot in the Guinness Book of Records by beating the previous sales record set by Apple's iPad.

"The sales figures here speak for themselves," said Gaz Deaves, editor of Guinness World Records 2011 Gamer's Edition, according to a Microsoft statement.
