Nokia, the world’s leading cellphone maker, will acquire US-based mobile browser firm Novarra for an undisclosed amount in a bid to improve Internet surfing application on its mobile devices.

Nokia in a statement said that it has signed an agreement to acquire 100 per cent of the outstanding shares of Novarra.

The company, however, did not disclose financial details.

The acquisition, subject to regulatory approvals, is expected to close in the second quarter of 2010, it said.

Novarra is known for developing web browser as well as platforms to serve content, advertisements and videos.

The privately held company’s mobile browser and services platform would be used by Nokia to deliver enhanced Internet experiences on its mobile devices. Nokia said that browser service technology would provide improved mobile web experience on its mainstream mobile phones.

The mobile browser technology would be put onto Nokia Series 40 mobile system, which is one of the most widely used mobile software, the company said.

Novarra, which has more than 100 employees, currently works with Vodafone, Verizon Wireless, Yahoo, Qualcomm and other leading companies that would provide Nokia an impressive client portfolio for its new mobile web browser.

“Connecting the next billion consumers to the Internet will happen primarily on mobile devices,” Nokia Executive Vice President (Services) Niklas Savander said.

The country’s largest mobile operator by subscriber base, Bharti Airtel, on Wednesday said it will sell Apple’s iPhone 3GS in the country from March 26.

The handset will be priced at Rs. 35,500 for the 16 GB model and Rs. 41,500 for the 32GB model, Bharti Airtel said in a statement.

Additionally, iPhone 3G continues to be available in the 8GB version for Rs. 29,500, it added.

Equipped with a longer battery life, the handset has a three-megapixel autofocus camera, allows video recording and hands free voice control.

Apple’s App Store provides access to more than 1.5 lakh applications across games, social networking, financial planning and health management. iPhone is now available in over 80 countries around the world.

“We are delighted with the opportunity to bring the eagerly-awaited iPhone 3GS to India. Combining the strength of the Airtel brand and network with the great user interface of iPhone 3GS, we are happy to bring to our customers an experience that will take mobile communications to a whole new level,” Bharti Airtel President (Mobile Services) Atul Bindal said.

Customers of iPhone 3GS will get 500 MB of free data every month for a year from the date of activation, it said.

Bharti Airtel has already submitted its bid in a bandwidth auction for third generation, or 3G, mobile telephony services in India and successful bidders would be allowed to offer 3G services on a commercial basis by the end of this year.

Google stopped censoring Internet search results in China on Monday in a move that was hailed by rights groups but drew an angry reaction from the Chinese authorities.

The Internet titan announced in a blog post that it had begun redirecting mainland Chinese users of its Chinese-language search engine Google.cn to an uncensored Google site in Hong Kong.

Google's decision came a little more than two months after the Mountain View, California-based company threatened to close its Chinese operations because of cyberattacks it said originated from China.

China reacted angrily to Google's move saying it was "totally wrong" to stop censorship and to blame Beijing for the alleged cyberattacks that Google said targeted email accounts of Chinese human rights activists around the world.

“In the U.S., over half of our households get water from lakes and rivers, and the fascinating thing is the reality that we really don’t know that,” she says. “It flows; we depend upon it; we trust it’s safe and clean, but really need to do a better job of taking care of our freshwater sources.”

Filmmaker Karan Johar, otherwise known for his jovial and friendly nature, has hit back at people making comments on his personal life on microblogging site Twitter.

“While most tweets are objective, frank and warm... the ones that are constantly making tactless statements about my personal life are upsetting,” Karan wrote.

“Critical appraisal and analysis is more than welcome...but insinuations and comments about my life, choices and orientation are NOT...,” he added.

Actress Sonam Kapoor tweeted in favour of Karan, suggesting he should block such people.

"Block them on your twitter account, they are haters who are just jealous," she wrote.

Right now he is busy completing his untitled film with Kajol, Kareena Kapoor and Arjun Rampal. The movie is an adaptation of Chris Columbus' 1998 movie "Stepmom”.

Karan is also expected to start shooting for the "Dostana" sequel with Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham this summer.

US Internet giant Google will close its business in China next month and may announce its plans next week, Chinese media reported on Frid

ay, after rows over censorship and hacking.
The China Business News said Google would go through with a threatened withdrawal from the country on April 10.
"We have learned that Google will leave China on April 10, but the information has not been confirmed by Google at present," the newspaper quoted an official with an unidentified Chinese advertising agency as saying.
The agency is a business partner of Google, the report said. The report did not specify whether Google would close all or part of its operations in the country.
The newspaper quoted an unidentified Google staff member as saying the company may announce on Monday the details of its exit from China and compensation for its local staff.
Google China spokeswoman Marsha Wang declined to comment on the report, telling AFP only that there has been "no update" on the company's situation.
Google has cried foul over what it said were cyber attacks aimed at its source code and the Gmail accounts of Chinese human rights activists.
The issue has exacerbated mounting tensions between China and the United States over a range of trade and diplomatic issues.
The company has continued to filter google.cn results to abide by Chinese censorship demands, but says it will eventually stop the screening.

Scientists have come up with yet more evidence of why tea is good for health - the drink can significantly reduce a woman's risk of developing ovarian cancer.

Previous research showed the tea also helps the heart, boosts the brain and lowers levels of"bad" cholesterol. Now, two studies have found that women women who drink two cups of black tea or one cup of green tea everyday could slash their risk of developing ovarian cancer by nearly half, the'Daily Express' reported.

The scientists have hailed the cancer-protecting properties of both teas which are packed with health-boosting antioxidants. One study at the University of Washington among 2,000 women, found those who drank one or more cups of green tea a day had a 54 per cent reduction in their chance of getting the cancer, which kills a number of women worldwide.

A second study by the National Institute of Environmental Medicine in Stockholm, also found that drinking at least two cups of black tea daily cut the risk of ovarian cancer by nearly 50 per cent.

Ace cinematographer V K Murthy was conferred the prestigious Dada Saheb Phalke Award by President Pratibha Patil at the 56th National Film Awards function here, which also saw Priyanka Chopra and Upendra Limaye winning top acting honours.

While Priyanka, 28, won the Rajat Kamal for Best Actress for her portrayal as an aspiring model in "Fashion", Marathi actor Limaye won in the Best Actor category for his performance in the social drama "Jogva". The award for Best Feature Film went to Bengali movie "Antaheen" which also bagged honours for Best Cinematography, Best Lyrics (for the song 'Pherari mon') and Best Female Playback Singer (Shreya Ghoshal). "Nothing beats the National Awards and the recognition also puts added responsibility on us to better ourselves.

The feeling is uncomparable," "Antaheen" director Aniruddha Roy Choudhary told PTI. Debutante actor Shams Patel, 13, won the award for Best Child Actor for his turn as a street urchin in the film "Thanks Maa". "I have never acted in my entire life, not even in school plays, so the award comes as a shock but I am happy beyond words," Patel, who idolises Salman Khan, said.
