Google Chrome to see radical changes

Tuesday, February 22, 2011 0 comments

google-chrome-logo-711569Software developers working on Google's popular Chrome browser are testing "radical" changes to its appearance.

Sources close to the company said the address bar currently takes up a significant amount of space that could be used for web browsing. One plan being considered would mean it was only visible when users made their mouse pointer hover over a specific part of the screen, the Telegraph reports.

The new "compact" navigation mode, described on the Chromium website as one of two key focuses for development, would take the web address bar out of each tab, releasing more screen space to display web pages.

Microsoft's Internet Explorer 9, which is available in a nearly final pre-release version, adopts a similar approach already. Chrome, however, is thought to be planning a significantly more stripped down version, working towards releasing almost the entire screen for web browsing.

More than 120 million users now use Google Chrome, which has been heavily advertised by Google. The company is also working on a 'Chrome OS' rival to Microsoft Windows.

Google updates Chrome every six weeks, but major upgrades tend to be far less frequent.

Intel's MeeGo is Back

CaptureIntel's MeeGo the yesteryear's mobile operating system of Nokia has again planned to come back into action and this was announced during the Mobile World Congress that was held in Barcelona, Spain. Intel also said that it will still continue to work with MeeGo.

Initially Intel's MeeGo was formed by combining Nokia's Maemo and Intel's Moblin platforms in February of 2010 and Nokia announced that it will shift its mobile operating system to Windows Phone 7 and this particular news stunned the mobile world.

Intel expressed its disappointment regarding this issue at the Mobile World Congress. Though Nokia said a big no to MeeGo, it is specially targeting devices like tablets and smartphones.

At the Mobile World Congress, Intel displayed a a tablet prototype based on an Intel Atom processor and running MeeGo 1.1. It also seems that the company acclaims they have more than 200 experts working on different MeeGo tablets. Intel warmly welcomed Ixonos to join their MeeGo ecosystem. Other companies has also been welcomed openly to join their MeeGo ecosystem.

Intel has invested its funds Kaltura, developer of an open source video management platform, to provide the users of MeeGo a rich-media functionalities on tablets, mobile phones, and other connected devices.

Is MeeGo a No-Go in Mobile Market?

Seeing the history of Nokia, MeeGo was only an OS for mobile devices but to market their OS for the tablets and smartphones, it is too late said experts. It is also very hard for them to compete with the Apple.

When MeeGo was formed by Nokia and Intel in Feb 2010, it announced that Linux-based software platform would support multiple hardware architectures which includes pocketable mobile computers, netbooks, tablets, media phones, connected TVs and in-vehicle infotainment systems.

It is believed that MeeGo is targeted at different levels of audience and different sections of platforms.

Drinking a glass of wine daily helps ward off dementia

Sunday, February 20, 2011 0 comments

Drinking a glass of wine daily helps ward off dementiaScientists have found that a daily cocktail or glass of wine could help delay dementia.

Their research has shown that alcohol is an anti-inflammatory (inflammation promotes Alzheimer's) and raises good HDL cholesterol, which helps ward off dementia.

Researchers at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Centre in North Carolina found that older people who had eight to 14 alcoholic drinks a week had a 37% lower risk of dementia than non-drinkers.

However, adults who go on occasional binges face a higher risk, reports the Daily Mail.

According to a Finnish study, adults who binged in midlife at least once a month -- drinking, for example, more than five bottles of beer or a bottle of wine at one sitting -- were three times more likely to develop dementia, including Alzheimer's, 25 years later.

Virender Sehwag 175 [ Century ] vs Bangladesh Highlights

Saturday, February 19, 2011 0 comments

2011 World Cup by Virender Sehwag, as he stunned the home crowd and the Bangladeshi team by scoring a magnificent century to put them at the back foot in very first match of the 2011 Cricket World cup. He started the inning with Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar and from the first ball he looked in great shape as he scored freely to the either side of the ground with ease. Once Tendulkar got himself out it was Sehwag who started playing some great shots and punished Banglali attack throughout the inning.
He was in a great shape to go all the way and break the World Record set by Sachin Tendulkar of 200 in the ODI inning, Alongside him was the Youngster Virat Kohli who kept on playing his shots once he started his innings. It was one of the great partnerships in the World Cup and one which would really give them a boost in the upcoming matches.

iPods filled with music could help patients recover from ops faster

Monday, February 14, 2011 0 comments

Apple iPods loaded with patients' favourite music could help them recover from operations faster.522300438

A trial will be conducted to test the theory that patients allowed to listen to music feel less pain, need less medication and leave hospital sooner after surgery, reports the Daily Express.

The trial would involve about 120 patients at Barts and The London NHS Trust, and be run by The Public Engagement Foundation charity.

If approved, the first to benefit will be new mothers, who will be exposed to music before and after they give birth, and those admitted for orthopaedic operations such as hip and knee replacements.

They will be monitored to see how music affects their anxiety levels, blood pressure and heart rate compared to those who don't listen to music.

Although it is thought that the best music to use depends on each patient's personal taste, the research will be used to create an original piece of music designed to have the most therapeutic effect. (ANI)

Google receives 75,000 job applications in one week

Saturday, February 5, 2011 0 comments

As Google launches a huge recruitment spree, the Internet giant received as many as 75,000 job applications in a week, it has emerged.evil-google

Previously, the company, based in Mountain View, California, held a record for the highest number of job applications when they hired a raft of new workers in May 2007.

But the latest barrage of applications topped that figure by an incredible 15% as the company plans to add 6,00 new jobs.

Competition for roles at the company is likely to be fierce with an average 12 hopeful candidates vying for a single position.

The company plans to increase hiring as it pushes deeper into mobile services, display advertising and Internet applications.

Google also faces stronger competition from Internet rivals Facebook Inc. that has taken a large share of the advertising market from Google and Apple Inc that plans to release more products in 2011.

Apple also plans to introduce iAd which will display adverts on its range of products.

"I love Google because of our people. It's inspiring to be part of the team. And that's why I am excited about 2011-because it will be our biggest hiring year in company history," the Daily Mail quoted Google's Alan Eustace, senior vice president of engineering and research, as writing in a blog post.

"We'll hire as many smart, creative people as we can to tackle some of the toughest challenges in computer science: like building a Web-based operating system from scratch, instantly searching an index of more than 100 million gigabytes and even developing cars that drive themselves," he said.

Google opens Android Web store

Thursday, February 3, 2011 0 comments

Google has launched a new online store of advanced software applications that run on mobile phones powered by Android software. Android Web store

Google's new online store, Market.Android.com, will allow Android users find new applications more easily from their computers, see recommendations by friends and download applications to their mobile devices, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Users of Android devices such as Motorola Mobility Inc.'s Droid or HTC Corp.'s Evo smartphones have previously had access to the application market via their devices, but many application makers complained it was difficult to get noticed there because the marketplace was partly built around lists of featured applications and top downloads.

Earlier, Apple had an edge over Android because it allowed users to find applications and buy them through the iTunes programme on their computers.

These "important changes to the Android market meet the needs of both users and developers", Chris Yerga, a Google engineering director, was quoted as saying.

Google said that the application makers could create Android applications that charge users for in-app purchases of virtual goods in games, among other things - a feature already available on applications running on Apple devices.

Google shows off Android 3.0

Google Inc has fixed some shortcomings in its tablet computer strategy, as the Internet search giant steps up efforts to break into a nascent market dominated by Apple. google-nexus-one-android-phone-3

Google has showcased the first version of its Android software designed to run on tablets with larger screens and greater computing horsepower, allowing for a sleeker and theoretically faster interface with built-in video conferencing.

The company also introduced a new way for developers to make money by building applications that run on Android.

The changes ratchet up the competition in the fast-growing tablet PC market, for which Hewlett-Packard and Microsoft are also developing rival software.

Analysts said "Honeycomb", while addressing a couple perceived flaws in the operating system when used for tablets as opposed to smartphones, was unlikely to immediately shift the balance of power.

"It closed the gap quite a bit," said BGC analyst Colin Gillis. But, he said "there was nothing there that was going to make me wait in line overnight," referring to the lines of customers who waited outside retail stores when Apple introduced the iPad in April.

Google said at an event at its Mountain View, California headquarters that Android developers would now be able to sell consumers goods from directly within their apps, a key capability Apple introduced more than one year ago.

Google launches Twitter workaround for Egypt

Tuesday, February 1, 2011 0 comments

Google Inc launched a special service to allow people in Egypt to send Twitter messages by dialing a phone number and leaving a voicemail, as Internet access remains cut off in the country amid anti-government protests.tweet-display
"Like many people we've been glued to the news unfolding in Egypt and thinking of what we could do to help people on the ground," read a post on Google's official corporate blog.
The service, which Google said was developed with engineers from Twitter, allows people to dial a telephone number and leave a voicemail. The voicemail is automatically translated into an audio file message that is sent on Twitter using the identifying tag #egypt, Google said.
Google said in the blog post, titled "Some weekend work that will (hopefully) enable more Egyptians to be heard," that no Internet connection is needed to use the service.
It listed three phone numbers for people to call to use the service.
Internet social networking services like Twitter and Facebook have been important tools of communications for protesters in Egypt who have taken to the streets since last week to demonstrate against the 30-year rule of President Hosni Mubarak.
Internet service has been suspended around the country and phone text messaging has been disabled.
A source familiar with the matter said Google, whose corporate motto is "Don't Be Evil," was not taking sides in the crisis in Egypt, but was simply supporting access to information as it has done with other services such as video website YouTube.
YouTube has been streaming live coverage of Al Jazeera's broadcasts of the events in Egypt.
Dozens of the so-called speak-to-tweet messages were featured on Twitter on Monday. The messages ranged from a few seconds to several minutes and featured people identifying themselves as Egyptians and describing the situations in various parts of the country.
"The government is spreading rumors of fear and of burglary and of violence," said one of the messages from an English speaker. "The only incidence of theft and burglary are done by the police themselves."
