Yahoo Japan teams with Google on search

Thursday, July 29, 2010 0 comments

Yahoo Japan will use Google technology to power its Internet search engine and search advertising platform, the Japanese company announced Tuesday, diverging from a nascent alliance between the U.S. Internet portal Yahoo and Microsoft.

The deal puts Yahoo Japan, partly owned by the U.S. company, on a sharply different path from that of its American cousin, Yahoo, which is planning to use Microsoft's Bing search technology by the end of this year under an agreement announced in 2009.

The partnership between Yahoo Japan and Google would create a powerhouse that combines Google's search technology with Yahoo Japan's popular content and services. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Yahoo holds 34.8 percent of Yahoo Japan, while Softbank, the Japanese cellphone and Web giant, owns 38.6 percent.

Google's share of Web searches in Japan has been growing, but it still trails Yahoo Japan, the market leader. According to Net Ratings, a research firm, Yahoo Japan grabs 53.2 percent of Web queries in the country, followed by Google at 37.3 percent. Microsoft's MSN and Bing searches garnered just 2.6 percent.

Globally, though, Google dominates -- the company had 85 percent of Internet queries, compared with 6.2 percent for Yahoo brand searches in June, according to the analysis arm of Net Applications, a Web services company.

Yahoo Japan's adoption of Google's search technology would mean that about 90 percent of Web queries in Japan would be powered by the company. Yahoo Japan used Google technology for its search engine from 2001 to 2004, but then switched back to Yahoo's system.

Masahiro Inoue, chief executive of Yahoo Japan, said that after a year of careful analysis, the company had concluded that it would ultimately benefit more from Google's search engine than from Microsoft's because of Google's record in Japanese-language queries. Google has had a presence in Japan since 2001.

PayPal Stops Electronic Withdrawal Facility

Wednesday, July 28, 2010 0 comments

Back in February, PayPal had shocked unsuspecting Indians by announcing a decision to suspend transactions to and from India. However, the order was restored after it announced the resumption of the payment services a few weeks later. That was after the Reserve Bank of India gave a green signal to restart bank withdrawals for settlements for exports of goods and services.

Just four months later, PayPal has announced another decision that could affect Indian PayPal users. Starting August 1, PayPal would NOT allow electronic withdrawal of funds from your PayPal account. The only option would be to request for a withdrawal of funds by cheque. According to PayPal, this decision had to be taken in accordance with "regulatory instructions".

PayPal also added that it is working towards restoring electronic withdrawal service.112408_paypalannounce If you have been using the electronic withdrawal facility, here is how to request for a cheque withdrawal:

Log into your PayPal account, click on 'Withdraw'.
Click on the 'Request a cheque from PayPal' link.
Enter the withdrawal amount and select your mailing address, then click 'Continue'.
Click 'Submit' to confirm your request.

PayPal, until now, used to charge a $5 "withdrawal fee" for every cheque withdrawal. That fee has been waived off for all withdrawals made on or after July 29.

Facebook launches online safety page

Facebook_Logo_0 Facebook has launched a Web page devoted to staying safe on the Internet.

The "Safety Page" will highlight news and initiatives focused on ways people can keep data secure at the world's leading online social-networking community, Joe Sullivan of Facebook said in a blog post.

The new page was intended to augment a virtual Safety Center that Facebook introduced in April and was based on a "security page" that boasted more than 2.2 million "fans".

"Online safety is a shared responsibility," Sullivan said. "We'll continue to think of innovative ways to promote safety on our service and elsewhere on the Web."

The number of people using Facebook topped the 500 million mark last week, meaning one in every 14 people on the planet has now signed up to the social netowork.

The launch of the Safety Page came in the wake of demands by privacy activists that Facebook give users of the booming social network more control over the use of their personal data.

A coalition of privacy groups, in an open letter to Facebook co-founder and chief executive Mark Zuckerberg last month, welcomed the social network's recent overhaul of its privacy controls but said additional steps were needed.

Now, tweet hands-free while driving!

Sunday, July 25, 2010 0 comments

Screenshot_1 British motorists may soon be able to tweet while driving with new hands-free technology from car company Ford.

A new voice-controlled application on iPhones and BlackBerries, called AppLink, will allow you to do just that.

Twitter - filmdom's latest battleground

It reads 'tweet' updates out loud while the car is on the move - but does not allow the driver to respond.

The software was created following a study that highlighted the dangers of driver inattention.

"Making SYNC even more intuitive and easier to use will encourage more drivers to take advantage of its hands-free capabilities, helping them keep their focus on driving," The Daily Mail quoted Mark Fields, Ford president of The Americas, as saying.

John Franklin, from the RAC, said, "However it's debatable whether this type of technology will help as it's likely to increase the distractions available to the driver.

Google Logo Celebrates Alphonse Mucha 150th Birthday

Google is celebrating the 150th birthday of Alphonse Mucha today with a custom Google Logo (or Google Doodle). The Alphonse Mucha Google logo is a depiction of what of his more famous works of art – however, I have not been able to figure out exactly what piece that is that’s depicted in the Google logo.

The style of Alphonse Mucha is evident, even in the Google logo. Mucha desired to depict women, their styles and images, with decorative art. Many of his paintings were used or reproduced for the purpose of paintings, illustrations, advertisements, and designs.alphonse-mucha-google-logo-2

According to Wikipedia, Alphonse Mucha’s paintings have moments of revivals, but also moments where there is hardly any expanding interest.

So far, the Google logo I see is the same one that’s been there since around midnight. Sometimes, Google will set up a series of images that flip through as each new pageload occurs.

It shows how Sachin runs from office to office to get his job done. The story of “Khatta Meetha” revolves around Sachin Tichkule (Akshay Kumar) who is a struggling road construction contractor whose dreams never come true as he is devoid of money which will help him to bribe the babus.

Americredit

Thursday, July 22, 2010 0 comments

General Motors Co. is getting back into the credit business, a move that will give retailers more options to lease and finance car sales.Americredit-resized200
GM said Thursday it would buy AmeriCredit Corp. in a cash transaction valued at approximately $ 3.5 billion and approximately and 24.50 per share.
The acquisition gives GM what is known as a unit captive finance or lending division that allows greater flexibility to offer leasing and finance deals. You could fill the role once played by GMAC, the company sold almost a minority interest in that company in 2006.
“Adding to our team AmeriCredit improve our competitiveness in the auto financing deals, and I am very happy to have them on board,” said Ed Whitacre, CEO of GM.
GM is already working with AmeriCredit to provide auto loans to customers “no preference” or poor credit ratings. But this agreement will enable GM to do more with leases, that after almost dying during the recession are beginning to make a comeback in the automotive industry and may represent as much as a quarter of car sales this year.
“This is a really good movement, strong and strategic for the company. All the cars are not sold due to lack of funding is money left on the table and has a negative impact on the balance sheet,” said Rebecca Lindland, an*n*lyst at IHS Automotive.
The automaker said it will continue working with financial Ally, the former finance company GMAC, loans to customers with good credit and provide inventory financing for dealers.
It would be both politically and financially unsustainable to break the relationship with Ally to channel all funding activities AmeriCredit, said Kirk Ludtke, an*n*lyst at CRT Capital Group in Stamford, Connecticut
The federal government has approximately 57 billion of commitments – including 17.9 billion and direct investment and 32 billion of consumer deposits and secured federal and $ 7 million in unsecured debt securities – a Ally said.
“We continue to believe that the Obama administration is unlikely to allow either GM or ally to pursue a strategy that would undermine others,” said Ludtke.
In addition, Ally is a bank holding company, giving him an advantage over the financing of a finance unit of GM in captivity in the short term, he said.
However, Ludtke said AmeriCredit and the transaction appears to be affordable and manageable for GM. He said the choice of the house will give the automaker some influence when it comes to Ally and other funders.
AmeriCredit purchase plugs what GM executives saw as a void in the automotive operations as it prepares for an initial public offering later this year or next year.
GM emerged from bankruptcy reorganization a year ago, with lots of federal loans to restructure its business. The government now owns 61% of the cars and is looking to recover the money that poured into GM.
Lindland said he should try to offer the planned actions “that much more successful, which in turn receives more tax money back.”
AmeriCredit The transaction is expected to close later this year pending approval of the shareholders of AmeriCredit. AmeriCredit shares rose and 4.36, or 22%, and 24.06 in morning trading.

Facebook membership hits 500 million mark

Image representing Facebook as depicted in Cru...

Image via CrunchBase

The number of people using Facebook hit the 500 million mark on Wednesday, meaning one in every 14 people on the planet has now signed up to online social-networking service.

"As of this morning, 500 million people all around the world are actively using Facebook to stay connected with their friends and the people around them," Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg said in a blog post.

"This is an important milestone for all of you who have helped spread Facebook around the world."

To celebrate, the California firm introduced an application that lets members of the online community "tell the incredible stories of the moving and interesting ways they've used Facebook."

Examples given by Zuckerberg included NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen jogging with Facebook fans during his term as Danish prime minister and a US woman using the service to battle breast cancer.

"Our mission at Facebook is to help make the world more open and connected," Zuckerberg said.

"Stories like these are examples of that mission and are both humbling and inspiring. I could have never imagined all of the ways people would use Facebook when we were getting started 6 years ago."

Knight and Day movie review

Wednesday, July 21, 2010 0 comments

When June (Cameron Diaz) bumps into Roy (Tom Cruise) at an airport, he seems like a nice guy. When they meet again on the plane, it looks like there might be something more between them. When he kills everyone else on the plane (they're all assassins sent to kill him), crashes the plane in a corn field, drugs her and leaves her back at her place… well, maybe that's a sign that something isn't quite right. knight_and_day_08

What follows is a collection of action sequences that usually end with June being drugged for her own good, which makes for a funny joke the first time around (as well as a fairly decent way to skip some boring scenes) unless you start to think about how you're watching a film about a woman falling in love with a guy who keeps knocking her out with drugs.

The action scenes are mostly well staged, but a heavy reliance on CGI blunts a lot of their impact once the cars start flying around, which leaves it the romance to keep things interesting. Tom Cruise Cameron Diaz Film Knight Day QvWU7fxzGyvl

Sadly, it's just not up to it.

Tom Cruise is charming and it's fun to see him loosen up a bit here, but the chemistry with Diaz isn't anything special and her performance (which is the heart of the film) sometimes feels a little flat.

If there was the slightest suggestion that anyone involved with this film had anything remotely interesting to say about male / female relationships, then the fact that only the first two action sequences provide any decent thrills wouldn't matter. As it stands, the only real draw here from start to finish is Tom Cruise's grin.Knight-and-day

Playboy launches a safe-for-work website

Tuesday, July 20, 2010 0 comments

Finally, something for those guys who say they read Playboy for the articles: a chance to prove it. playboynew295

Playboy Enterprises launched a website Tuesday that it swears will be safe to browse while at work, eliminating the need for men to throw themselves over their computer screen when the boss walks by.

TheSmokingJacket.com will contain none of the nudity that makes Playboy.com NSFW -- not suitable for work. Instead, it'll rely on humor to reach Playboy's target audience, men 25 to 34 years old, when they are most likely to be in front of a computer screen. Screenshot_1

"A lot of our audience logs on (to Playboy.com) after work and we saw that we were missing a golden opportunity to reach guys when they're online the most: when they're sitting at their desk, not working, sending e-mails to their friends," said Jimmy Jellinek, Playboy's editorial director.
The site, named after one of Playboy founder Hugh Hefner's favorite pieces of clothing (silkpajamas.com was taken), won't include the long interviews or in-depth articles found in Playboy.

Instead, it's meant to be decidedly un-serious. Or, in the parlance of its audience, ROFL -- rolling on the floor, laughing. And cool, "basically a juke box of cool," said Jellinek.

Among the original content visitors to the site will see is a list of signs that show a man has given up trying to attract women. They include wearing Velcro sneakers and pants with elastic waistbands -- clothing Hef wouldn't be caught dead wearing, if he thought of wearing anything but his trademark jammies.

The site will dip into the Playboy archives with photographs like those from the 1983 Playmate Playoffs, in which bathing suit-clad women competed in games such as a tug-of-war. There will be links to the kinds of things people are already e-mailing their friends, from funny moments on television shows such as "The Colbert Report" and "The Daily Show" to a Korean Parliament brawl that's been a big Web hit recently.

how to download new rupee symbol for free

Fret no more about downloading the rupee symbol on to your computer. The symbol may take a while to appear on the keyboard but can rightaway be typed as a character, thanks to a newly-created font.

Mangalore-based Foradian Technologies Pvt Ltd has created a font called Rupee_Foradian. It can be downloaded from the company’s blogsite — http://blog.foradian.com — and used for free. PTI7_15_2010_000095B

The company's CEO Unni Koroth told TOI that it was "something of an amusement to us in this era of technological advancement" that the government of India said it would take more than a year for the symbol to become commercially available. "We thought of doing something about it," he said. The company created a vector image of the new rupee sign and mapped the 'grave accent' symbol — the key just above the tab button on the keyboard — with it. This keystroke was chosen because most users and programmers don't use it.|

Within the hour, the trial version of the font was downloaded 1,100 times. When downloads crossed the 5,000 mark, the company worked on the full version, which it has also made available for free on the site. A YouTube video — www.youtube.com/watch?v=XSfhzuU7Crw — shows how easy it is to use the symbol. Many users of social networking sites have started using it, as have hundreds of bloggers. Version 2.0 of the font was released within 24 hours of the announcement of the rupee symbol.

Soon, Google to 'predict your desires'

Sunday, July 18, 2010 0 comments

Google may soon be able to deliver search results to its users even before they know that they want the information.

Amit Singhal, one of Google''s veteran search algorithm engineers, wants to develop a search engine that second-guesses users'' needs well ahead of time. google_logo

"I call it searching without searching," New Scientist quoted him as saying at a briefing at Google''s London headquarters yesterday.

Giving an example of his wife's upcoming birthday, he said, "It might suggest I buy her an iPad and point me to some relevant product reviews," he says. But SWS might also discover, again from fishing in recent social media, that the local gadget store has a three-week waiting list for iPads. "So it would bring forward its alert to give me time to order it."

Singhal points out that Twitter can beat newscasters to warn you of events that might affect you: an earthquake that hit San Francisco in January sent ripples through Twitter 10 minutes before a news alert from the US Geological Survey alerted the professional news media.

However, the hitch is that the search engine might prompt you for a whole lot of information about your life and the lives of those close to you. It will know birthdays and anniversaries, consumer gadget preferences, preferred hobbies and pastimes, even favourite foods. It will also know where you are, and be able to get in touch with your local stores via their websites.

"If searching-without-searching happens, it needs to be done in an incredibly privacy-preserving way, with full control by the users over what it knows," Singhal says. "That''s going to take an awful lot of innovation," Singhal says.
