Google building Facebook rival

Wednesday, June 30, 2010 0 comments
Web world is abuzz with rumours that Google's Facebook rival is in works. The rumour mill began churning after Digg founder Kevin Rose posted a tweet last weekend (saturday to be precise), saying, "Ok, umm, huge rumor: Google to launch facebook competitor very soon 'Google Me,' very credible source." Google_Goolag_Scanner_hackers
Wondering how Google Me will really work? Experts believe that Google already has almost 30 different social properties that it has acquired or built including YouTube, Picassa, Google Profiles, Google Docs, Google Friends Connect and Google Latitude. So, the company largely has almost every component that it requires to built a Facebook killer. All it needs to do is a bit of organisation and create a common platform for all these networks.
However, so far Google is still to get a hit in the social networking space. Orkut, one of the pioneers in social network, today has little following except in Brazil and India. More recently, the company made another foray into social networking arena with Google Buzz, which aims to upgrade Gmail into a social networking hub from just an e-mail service. However, the service has been relegating to more of a Web 2.0 sharing tool than a social networking hub.
Several analysts also wonder if Google would really risk waging a full-scale war against Facebook, which has seen its fortunes soar in the past year.
Writes eWeek's Clint Boulton, "Google challenging Facebook in social is like Facebook challenging Google in search," he writes. "People are comfortable socializing on Facebook, which is where their friends (and their friends of friends are) and they are comfortable searching on Google, which is where all of the data about businesses, places and other facts live. Unless and until there are technological improvements on both sides, paired with practical user behavior shifts from consumers, never the twain shall meet."
While analysts may continue to debate the issue, the rumour has been further fanned by Adam D’Angelo, former Facebook CTO and now founder of Q&A service Quora (on Quora only).
Here's what Angelo wrote on Quora.
* This is not a rumor. This is a real project. There are a large number of people working on it. I am completely confident about this.
* They realized that Buzz wasn't enough and that they need to build out a full, first-class social network. They are modeling it off of Facebook.
* Unlike previous attempts (before Buzz at least), this is a high-priority project within Google.
* They had assumed that Facebook's growth would slow as it grew, and that Facebook wouldn't be able to have too much leverage over them, but then it just didn't stop, and now they are really scared.

Text-to-speech software developed for Tamil, Kannada

Saturday, June 26, 2010 0 comments

Bangalore-based Indian Institute of Science has developed a text-to-speech (TTS) software for Tamil and Kannada languages, which will help the speech impaired.tamil

"It converts text that is already coded in the computer into speech or audible wave forms. We have it in both Tamil and Kannada and it takes a fraction of a second to read what is written," A G Ramakrishnan, Professor of Department of Electrical Engineering at IISc and project head, told PTI.

Ramakrishnan was here to present a paper in the Tamil Internet Conference as part of the ongoing World Classical Tamil Conference.

He said the project has been named Tirukural (the ancient Tamil collection of couplets), with a pun on "kural" which also means 'voice' in Tamil.
While there was a similar TTS software in Hindi, there was no such one available for other Indian languages, he said.

The research team has tied up with Bangalore-based St John's Hospital for a pilot project of this software, which could be used only with Tamil unicode.

While Ramakrishnan wanted to do a complete Tamil software, he had to cope with the reality that the spoken language is also interspersed with English words, especially among Tamil speakers.

"The next version of Tirukural will bridge this gap which has not been cared for in the present version," he said, adding it will be ready by a week or so.

He said globally, hundreds of thousands of dollars were being invested on TTS for English but little investment had been done for regional language.

Facebook sets sights on mobile users

Friday, June 25, 2010 0 comments

Mark Zuckerberg looks almost as popular as Facebook, going by the rush of audience for a question and answer session with the founder and CEO of the online social network at the Debussy that forced the organisers to open other auditoriums to show him live on screen.facebook-2

And he didn’t disappoint and dealt with all the questions thrown at him. “Internet makes the communication two-way discussions, with marketers and even with the government. However, the trend I see is that the Net is becoming more personal. So, Facebook has to create products that are personalised,” said Zuckerberg.

The quest to create personalised products for Facebook users triggers the question of privacy. Zuckerberg admitted that as Facebook started rolling out new features, there were too many controls. “People had a legitimate question on us having too many controls. But people now want control over what they want to share,” he said.

The trend of brands releasing their communication on Facebook for millions to see and engage is what Zuckerberg thinks is the way in the future. But when it comes to Facebook making money, he said the key is servicing the partners — users, advertisers and developers — over a long time frame.

Even as Facebook is a rage in certain parts of the world, India with a low 40 million internet penetration and a high mobile telephony usage is a challenge for Facebook. The solution, Zuckerberg said, is to build a uniform platform that runs horizontally – be it web, Facebook, mobile applications. “So it can be fitted into markets like India,” he said.

Sania Mirza crashes out of Wimbledon

Sania Mirza at the 2007 Australian Open

Image via Wikipedia

India's Sania Mirza-Malik was beaten in straight sets in the first round of the women's singles on the opening day of the all-England lawn tennis championships at Wimbledon on Monday.
Sania, ranked 111, lost 4-6, 1-6, to 54th ranked German Angelique Kerber after a flourishing start in a late match.

Sania, returning to circuit after nursing a wrist injury for nearly three months, clearly looked out of sorts as she had very little preparation heading into the Grand Slam event.
The Indian, who during the break from tennis married former Pakistan cricket captain Shoaib Malik, lost in the second round in the warm-up tournament at Birmingham and then failed to make it to the main draw at Eastbourne.
Sania started breaking Kerber in the first game of the match, but that advantage was nullified as she herself dropped serve twice to lose the first set.
The German thereafter hardly looked like relaxing her stranglehold on the match as made Sania realise that she needs to do much more if she has to make headway on the circuit.
The Indian kept making simple unforced errors and from 17 in the first set they mounted to 31 by the time the German closed out the match.
Sania's continued to have trouble with her serve and that compounded her woes as she could not even get half of her first serves in.
Sania will now have to concentrate on doubles with her Danish partner Caroline Wozniacki.
Their opening round opponents are Anne Keothavong and Melanie South of Great Britain.

General McChrystal Reportedly Ordered Back to U.S.

062210_mcchrystal_doomsday_604x341 General Stanley McChrystal was reportedly called back to the United States earlier today, Fox News reports, ‘for a face-to-face meeting with President Obama after issuing an apology Tuesday for an interview in which he described the president as unprepared for their first meeting.’

In the interview with Rolling Stone McChrystal also criticized Ambassador Karl Eikenberry, saying he felt “betrayed” by his diplomatic partner.

McChrystal’s comments are reverberating through Washington and the Pentagon after the magazine depicted him as a lone wolf on the outs with many important figures in the Obama administration. It characterized him as unable to convince some of his own soldiers that his strategy can win the nation’s longest-running war and dejected that the president didn’t know about his commendable military record.

The article, written by a journalist who was allowed to travel with McChrystal and his inner circle for weeks, further states that although McChrystal voted for Obama, the two failed to connect from the start. The president apparently even called McChrystal “on the carpet” for “speaking too bluntly about his wish for more troops.” Darn those generals who are determined to win wars even when politicians are trying to surrender without losing face!

In any case, the interview caused quite a stir. So much even so, that McChyrstal felt forced to apologize earlier today saying: “I extend my sincerest apology for this profile. It was a mistake reflecting poor judgment and should never have happened.”

He has now been called back. We will remain on top of this story, more to come later.

UPDATE

CNN reports that the general and his aides were apparently caught making fun of Vice PresidentJoe Biden. Although it’s clear to anyone with half a brain that Biden certainly is an idiot, a general doesn’t have the luxury to say so out loud, especially not when in the company of journalists and on the record.

Twitter warns of possible outages during World Cup football

Monday, June 14, 2010 0 comments

With World Cup Football frenzy gripping online users, micro-blogging site Twitter has warned of possible outages due to heavy traffic during the event. 13IN_TWEET_123473f

Twitter has been grappling with many site problems in the past week, resulting in outages and poor performance.

“As more people turn to Twitter to see what’s happening in the world (or in the World Cup), you may still see the whale when there are unprecedented spikes in traffic,” one of the engineers at the micro-blogging site, Jean-Paul Cozzatti, said in a blog.

When the site is down, a whale appears on the Twitter site, generally accompanied by a message requesting users to try after sometime.

During the World Cup tournament, a significant surge in activity on Twitter is expected, according to the blog posted on June 11.

“While we are making every effort to prepare for that surge, the whale may surface,” Mr. Cozzati noted.

Last week, Twitter experienced several incidences of poor site performance and a high number of errors, which was due to “over-capacity” in one of its internal networks.

Going by estimates, Twitter has over 75 million users worldwide.

To avoid problems in the coming days, the blog said that Twitter has doubled its internal network capacity, apart from rebalancing the traffic to redistribute the load.
